Superfast Broadband Boosting Business
Figures released by the government this week have indicated that local businesses have benefitted to the tune of £9m since the rollout of superfast broadband. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) released a report this week that the rollout of superfast broadband to previously commercially un-viable areas has boosted the UK economy by £690m by raising nationwide coverage to 95.39%.
The expansion of superfast broadband capabilities has enabled up to five million homes and business to have faster internet access, reaping tangible benefits in the form of economic growth. The report claims a jump in employment of 49,000 and a reduction in claimants of jobseeker’s allowance. 9,000 fewer individuals claimed in areas serviced by the rollout.
The government has revealed that it reached its target of ensuring 95% of the country were covered by superfast broadband and has set a new target of 98% coverage. The new Universal Service Obligation states a target of 100% superfast coverage by 2020.
